／シラチャのサービスアパートメント

タイのシラチャに計画中の日本人家族向けのサービスアパートメント。一歩敷地の外に出ると異国という環境で、日本人の核家族85世帯が集まっていかに快適に住まえるかが求められた。閉じた社会が発生し、その軋轢から部屋に篭ってしまう赴任者の妻なども少なくないと聞く。そこで85の家族というより170の大人と170の子ども、さらには340の個人が暮らしているという視点を持ち、特定の集団への帰属意識があいまいになるような、のびやかな人間の集合状態を、建物のなりたちで生じさせようとした。半年～3年程度で入れ替わる住まい手が主体的に自分の場所を選び取り、気負わず自由な人間関係を築ける集合住宅を目指した。
敷地周辺には低層低密な戸建住宅が点在し、肥沃な大地に樹高10m超の樹木が生い茂る。中低層の分棟形式を採用。棟ごとに異なるボリューム、階数、住戸数、住戸形式である。セキュリティを重視しつつも、敷地外のさまざまな方向から人々の活動が見える。
心地よい半屋外空間と人びとの活動のリサーチを行なった。一年を通して高温多湿なタイにおいて、太陽は南側に傾くことなく地面に直交する弧を描く。庇の真下に影ができ、屋根のかたちがそのまま半屋外の領域を形成する。豊かな生活風景は屋根下に見出される。
公園やプールといった機能のほかに、9の住居棟にロング・スペース（細長い半屋外空間）を沿わせ、ひとつながりにして回遊性をもたせる。住戸の外に、気候をふまえたアクティビィティのスペースを各階ごとに数多く設ける。ここでは日本特有の北側廊下／南側居室の前提がない。住居棟とロング・スペースは、場所に応じて自由な方向に配置することができる。
タイの街並で一般的な構造形式をもとに、プライバシーが求められる住棟はRC造に、住戸外での活動の喜びにあふれるロング・スペースは鉄骨造とした。ラーメン構造の柱梁により一室の規模を示しつつ、分棟にすることでどの棟に何家族、何人が住んでいるのかわからないようにした。たいして住居内は居間、台所、寝室など家族の明確なかたちを与えた。
異国のサービスアパートメントでは敷地外と住戸内の生活が断絶する。ロング・スペースはその断絶をつなぐように、集まっておしゃべりするといった都市的な活動や、母子が今日の出来事を語り合う住居的な活動のどちらをも許容する。基本的に幅を3000mm以上とし、住戸の延長にある室のようなプロポーションとボリュームにとどめた。角を曲がるたびにドラマティカルに異なる風景が展開する。

This project, now in the planning phase, concerns the design of a serviced apartment complex for Japanese residents in Sriracha, Thailand. Since the area outside the site will be, in the Japanese perspective, a foreign country, our goal is to figure out how to provide the highest level of comfort for the 85 Japanese nuclear families that will reside there. We hear it is not uncommon for people to feel extremely isolated while living overseas under these circumstances. This can generate conflicts and, as a result, greater isolation. Whit this in mind, instead of focusing on 85 families, we decided to focus on the 170 adults and 170 children, the 340 individuals who will live in the complex. We sought to facilitate the relaxed gatherings within the building to reduce the sense of belonging to the specific groups. Since residents may stay for periods ranging from around six months to three years, our goal is to create communal housing that will enable residents to actively select places to spend time, and effortlessly build relationships within each other.
The surrounding neighborhood is dotted with low-rise, low-density detached houses and is thickly covered with trees more than 10 meters in height, which spring up from the fertile soil. Our design divides the complex up into mid-rise and low-rise buildings. Different buildings have different spatial volumes, numbers of floors, and numbers and types of units. Though we placed great emphasis on security, residents will be able to observe activities of people outside the site in many directions.
We researched comfortable semi-outdoor spaces as well as people’s activities. In Thailand, which is hot and humid throughout the year, the sun travels in an arc perpendicular to the earth, not one inclined toward the south. Shadows fall directly below eaves and shapes of roofs faithfully delineate semi-outdoor areas. In this area, one often observes rich scenes of daily life playing out beneath roofs.
Referring to Thailand’s most common structural types, we used reinforced concrete to provide privacy to the residential towers, and steel to make the vibrant, energetic Long Space outside apartment units. The columns and beams of the moment-resisting frames articulate the scales of the individual rooms. Despite this, by dividing the complex up into multiple buildings, we have made it difficult to figure out how many people and families will be living in any given building. In contrast, on apartment interiors, we have arranged the living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms and so on, in order to give the families clear shapes. In addition to a park and pool, we designed a “Long Space”, that is, a long, narrow, semi-outdoor space- that will run along the nine residential buildings, connecting them and creating a place to stroll. Outside of the apartment units, on each floor, we have established numerous activity spaces that will be well-suited to the climate. We arranged the residential buildings and the Long Space in whichever direction seemed best for each particular place.
