／神迎えの灯　行灯デザイン　2010

“CitySwitch 2010 IZUMO” ワークショップにおいて、八百万の神々をお迎えするためにデザインした行灯。旧暦十月、島根県出雲市大社町において神在祭が執り行われる。その際、稲佐の 浜でお迎えした八百万の神々が出雲大社へご神幸される神聖な道を「神迎の道」と呼ぶ。この行灯は神在祭の期間中に、神迎の道沿い（総長1300m）の住宅 •店舗の軒下に吊るされる。

神々をお迎えする光には、お祭りの提灯のような丸く暖かい光ではなく、一縷の炎のような緊張感を帯びた原始的 な光がふさわしいと考えた。同時に、光の方向性が強いLED照明（道の会の方々がすでに所有していた）の特性を生かし、受光面が光の進行方向に細長くなる 形状とした。道幅が狭い（車二台が行き交いづらい）のに空は開けた風景が延々と海まで続く、神迎の道自体が持つ独特なスケール感を意識して、最終的なボ リュームを決定した。
また、ワークショップの性格上、今後も地元の方々が継続して製作できることは必須であった。そこで、布の張力のみで全体を支 える、枠組を一切必要としない簡単なつくりとした。よって、一本のひもで吊るして初めて行灯の形態をなし、全体が圴一な照度で光ることになる。その他、マジックテープによる着脱、水抜孔など簡単で効果的なディテールで容易なメインテナンスを実現している。

Installed during the “CitySwitch 2010 IZUMO” workshop, the lanterns were designed to welcome eight million gods for the Kamimukae ceremony in Taishacho Kizukihigashi. During that time the gods are picked up at the beach of Inasa and walk through the sacred roads towards Izumo Taisha Shrine, following the “Kamimukae no michi”, “the way of a shrine”. These lanterns were suspended under the roofs of the shops along the path of the gods, for a total length of 1300 m.

For the light to welcome the gods, the conceived design is that of a primitive light with a tense feeling and a single flame, differing from the classical round warm light of the festivals. At the same time, taking advantage of the characteristics of LED lighting (already owned by the shops on the road), which has a strong directionality of light, the lantern surface is elongated in the light direction. While the road width is narrow, the sky is open until the ocean, conscious of the peculiar scale feeling of the road itself, the final volume was decided.
Also, due to the nature of the workshop, it was imperative that local people could continue the production independently. Therefore, the proposed design is very simple, and works only with the tension of the fabric, without the need of any framework.
Thus, just by hanging with a single string, the whole volume will shine with a single luminescence. In addition, maintenance is easy and effective, just by removing Velcro tape, and drain holes can be realized easily.
